Anatomy and Physiology I



This course is designed as an introduction to the basics of human anatomy and physiology. Students will learn medical terminology, structures and functions that relate to systems of the body. Content covers how cells form specialized tissues and organs that compose general systems in an organism. Areas of focus include the skeletal, muscular, integumentary, circulatory and lymphatic systems. Students are also introduced to the concept of homeostasis and how the body regulates change.





Kinesiology I



This course is designed to teach specific palpation skills of various muscle groups, specifically the back and upper body. Students will learn to locate and identify the attachments of muscles, as well as how to lengthen and shorten each muscle. This class provides a working understanding of range of motion, as well as general sites of caution. Basic medical and anatomical terminology will be taught, as well as an understanding of joints, connective and muscle tissues.





Communication and Boundaries



An in-depth exposure to client management skills. Students will learn intake procedures and consultation skills, charting and record keeping, as well as how to develop professional massage policies. Class discussion covers different styles of communication (spoken, non-verbal, written), as well as learning specific response skills. This class will also explore such issues as the psychological implications of touch, trauma and emotional release. Students will explore boundaries in detail, along with their relevance to massage therapy. Additional topics include developing awareness of dual relationships and power differentials.

Anatomy and Physiology II



This course builds upon the previous introduction to the basics of human anatomy and physiology. Students will continue with medical terminology, structures and functions that relate to systems of the body. Areas of focus include the nervous, endocrine, respiratory, digestive, and reproductive systems. Course concludes with a comprehensive overview of the human organism.





Kinesiology II



This course continues to develop specific palpation skills of various muscle groups, specifically the torso and lower body. Students will locate and identify the attachments of muscles, as well as how to lengthen and shorten each muscle. Students will demonstrate their working knowledge of range of motion and assessment. By the end of this course, students will be able to locate, describe, and demonstrate actions of all the major muscles in the body.





Pathology



In this class students will learn about basic illnesses, conditions and pathologies that they may encounter among massage clients. They will deepen their understanding of working with stress, trauma and pain as therapists. Common integumentary, musculoskeletal and myofascial conditions will be presented. Students will sharpen their assessment skills and learn to develop a session plan. Contraindications for massage will be reviewed. The course also covers the body's mechanical approach to healing through the stages of inflammation.





Professional Ethics, Business Skills & Law



This course covers a wide array of important topics to help students realize the importance of professional ethics and the corresponding legal issues. Through lecture and discussion, students will deepen their understanding of the complications surrounding sexuality and bodywork. Professionalism, confidentiality and health practitioner responsibilities are covered in detail. Additional topics such as business management, marketing, insurance, billing are also addressed, and a comprehensive business plan will be developed by the student as a final project. Oregon jurisprudence as it relates to massage is specifically covered.
